Overview
One of the leading and most inventive voices writing music today, Esa-Pekka Salonen begins his Cal Performances residency with a concert of his own music. In this Composer Portrait concert, Salonen introduces four signature works written between 2000 and 2010 in a discussion moderated by Cal Performances Director Matías Tarnopolsky. UC Berkeley's own Eco Ensemble, under the direction of David Milnes, performs the exuberant cello and ensemble work Mania; leading Los Angeles-based pianist Gloria Cheng performs Dichotomie, written specially for her as a surprise; and the extraordinary Calder Quartet performs Salonen's only string quartet, Homunculus.
