"A constant combination of surprise and confidence—every moment...seemed new and unexpected, and yet it all made glorious sense."—San Francisco Chronicle
Jennifer Koh, violin
Anssi Karttunen, cello
An international trio of new-music virtuosos convenes to explore solo, duo, and trio repertoire by four towering figures in contemporary music. Cellist Anssi Karttunen has long enjoyed collaborative relationships with fellow Finnish composers Kaija Saariaho, Magnus Lindberg, and Esa-Pekka Salonen, who have each composed demanding works especially for him. Here Karttunen joins with British pianist Nicolas Hodges and American violinist Jennifer Koh in a program that features a virtuoso solo work by Salonen, Lindberg's Piano Trio, Saariaho's stunning Light and Matter, and two US premieres by the brilliant Franco-American composer Betsy Jolas.
