The Joffrey Ballet is celebrated for "wise casting, wickedly talented dancers, [and] world-class choreographers" (Berkeleyside). Son of Chamber Symphony by Stanton Welch, which premiered to rave reviews at Jacob's Pillow, is set to John Adams's restless score, and Alexander Ekman's West Coast premiere of the rambunctious Episode 31 opens to urgent, explosive rhythms before settling into a serene duet dance to a reading of Christina Rossetti's poem "Color." Val Caniparoli's abstract work Incantations is set to a score by Russian minimalist composer Alexandre Rabinovitch-Barakovsky, and continuous movement of the piece creates a zen-like spiral of movement and emotion.
