Recitals at Cal Performances
The Cal Performances recital series brings a stunning range of internationally-celebrated vocalists, pianists, and string virtuosi to UC Berkeley stages, from beloved stars to next-generation artists on the rise. Vocalists in the series have included Susan Graham, Renée Fleming, Dawn Upshaw, Cecilia Bartoli, Audra McDonald, Ian Bostridge, Eric Owens, Julia Bullock, Iestyn Davies, Joyce DiDonato, and Anne-Sofie von Otter, performing repertoire from opera arias, to French, German, and Italian song, to selections from the Great American Songbook; and brand-new commissions. Piano recitalists such as Emmanuel Ax, Richard Goode, Nicolas Hodges, Rudolf Buchbinder, Murray Perahia, Garrick Ohlsson, Jonathan Biss, Malcolm Martineau, Andras Schiff, Yefim Bronfman, and Alfred Brendel have mined the monumental body of solo works by Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Schumann, and Bach, among many other composers. The series has also boasted appearances by violinists Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell, Hilary Hahn, Gil Shaham, Gidon Kremer, Pinchas Zukerman, Jennier Koh, and Christian Tetzlaff, and cellists Yo-Yo Ma, Anssi Karttunen, Sheku Kanneh-Mason, and Alisa Weilerstein.
The 2021–22 season presents veteran artists like tenor Jonas Kaufmann, pianist Leonidas Kavakos and pianist Yuja Wang, cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han, and pianist Daniil Trifonov; well as new talents who have risen to worldwide attention, such as violinist Tessa Lark, pianist Eric Lu, tenor Paul Appleby, soprano Angel Blue, countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński, and mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton, plus the all-star string duo of mandolinist Avi Avital and guitarist Miloš.
