Paul Lewis’ arresting performances have been praised for their “total fidelity to the music’s structure and inner spirit, and an emotional response that never suffocates or distorts” (The Times, London). Revered for his interpretations of canonical works of the Classical and Romantic periods, Lewis makes his long-awaited return to Cal Performances with a pair of timeless Mozart sonatas, matched with Mendelssohn’s virtuosic Variations sérieuses and Copland’s rarely performed, enigmatic Piano Variations, which Leonard Bernstein once described as “sharp as nails … so prophetic, harsh and wonderful, and so full of modern feeling and thinking.”
