Theater at Cal Performances

Theater events at Cal Performances bring innovative productions, many in their West Coast and Bay Area premieres—from revivals of classic works to brand-new creations in imaginative multimedia formats. Visiting theater companies in recent years have included Berlin’s Schaubühne, Paris’ Théâtre de la ville, Cape Town’s Handspring Puppet Company, and French Canadian Director Robert Lepage’s Ex Machina. Actors John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe, puppeteer Basil Twist, and director Peter Sellars have also brought stunning works to life on the Zellerbach Hall stage, and the series has also presented major collaborative works in opera and dance, such as Available Light (John Adams/Frank Gehry/Lucinda Childs) and Einstein on the Beach (Philip Glass/Robert Wilson/Lucinda Childs); and Baroque opera collaborations between Mark Morris Dance Company and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Chorale.

The 2021–22 theater season features the live cinema collective Manual Cinema’s production Frankenstein; composer Ted Hearne’s new staged oratorio Place; and Angélique Kidjo’s new music-theater work, Yemandja.
