Named a BBC New Generation Artist by age 22—an honor that has led to performances with all the BBC orchestras, at Wigmore Hall, and on multiple BBC broadcasts—Tom Borrow’s star is on the rise. Borrow is a protégé of Murray Perahia, and his debut with the Cleveland Orchestra several seasons ago put him on the international map: the Cleveland Plain Dealer raved, “Borrow stands out with a touch that’s both light and powerful, and supremely incandescent.” Here he plays Mozart’s Sonata in A minor alongside Liszt’s “operatic fantasy” based on Mozart’s Don Giovanni, plus his notoriously complex and harrowing Sonata in B minor.
Run time for this performance is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, including intermission.

Just before pianist Tom Borrow’s performance in Hertz Hall, students from UC Berkeley’s Pianism undergraduate seminar take the stage right across the way in Morrison Hall to offer a lively introduction to the music of the afternoon: Mozart’s Piano Sonata in A Minor, K. 310 (1778); Liszt-Mozart’s Don Juan Fantasy (1841/1877); and Liszt’s Sonata in B Minor (1853–57). Drawing on close listening and insights into the myths and contradictions surrounding Liszt’s legendary virtuosity and “the recital” (which Liszt all but invented), the students explore what these works meant to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century audiences—and what they might mean to us now.
This event is co-presented by the UC Berkeley Department of Music.
