DRUM TAO’s phenomenal appeal is created through performances that honor Wadaiko traditional Japanese ensemble drumming (kumi-daiko) and the beautiful melodies of Japanese flutes and harps. It is the Japanese entertainment for a new generation that completely surpasses expectations.

In February 2016, the company’s Off-Broadway performances in New York were completely sold out. DRUM TAO was featured in Newsweek magazine, which stated, “The highly acclaimed debut of DRUM TAO in Broadway will represent not only Japanese entertainment but Japan itself.”

The production Mangekyo premiered in Tokyo in 2017. This full-length program aimed at international tourists became widely popular and was later expanded to play for more than six months during 2018. Mangekyo also returned for more than a year in the company’s exclusive theater during the year of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020.

In 2017, DRUM TAO made its major debut with Universal Music in a compilation of work from the past 25 years, a recording that ranked in the top three on the iTunes World Album charts in five different countries.

DRUM TAO performed in the opening ceremony of Japonisms 2018 in Paris. The company also appeared with the Bolshoi Ballet as the opening act of the Japan Year in Russia held at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.

DRUM TAO has been honored for Outstanding Cultural Contribution in Oita Prefecture and has received the Culture Creators Award from the city of Taketa, the Japan Tourism Agency Commissioner Award, and the Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications Award from the Japanese government.
