Berkeley Symphony

Berkeley Symphony is unique among Bay Area and American orchestras for its commitment to innovation, community, and excellence. Founded in 1971 in the intellectual and artistic nexus of Berkeley, California, the orchestra is committed to premiering and commissioning new music, sustained by the supportive musical environment of Berkeley, the East Bay, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Berkeley Symphony ushered in a new era with the appointment of Joseph Young as the orchestra’s fourth music director, following his highly successful and critically acclaimed debut appearance as guest conductor in January 2019. In 2021, Young returned to the stage as music director for the historic 50th anniversary season, which celebrates the orchestra’s rich history; showcases diverse programming ranging from familiar, reimagined classics to the music of today; and looks toward an exciting future of artistic innovation.
