ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE

Visionary South African artist William Kentridge returns to Cal Performances with his seminal work that unfolds across a 180-foot stage. Watching it, you want to be everywhere at once. Processions give way to shadows, songs, projected drawings, proverbs, chants, European modernist quotations, African languages, and Dadaist eruptions of sound and nonsense. Together, they chronicle the untold history of the more than two million Africans who labored, fought, and died in the First World War.

Premiered in 2018 and seen in only six cities worldwide, the work now arrives in the Bay Area for a must-see West Coast premiere. Good luck!
