On Tuesday, April 28, 2020, Cal Performances’ board of trustees co-chairs Helen Meyer and Susan Graham, and executive and artistic director Jeremy Geffen, announced the organization’s 2020–21 season, the first full season of Geffen’s curation since he joined the organization in April 2019. Geffen, who previously held the post of senior director and artistic adviser at Carnegie Hall, brings to Berkeley his own close relationships with an international cohort of esteemed artists, initiating new long-term associations with a dazzling variety of ensembles, composers, and performers. The 2020–21 season features more than two dozen artists performing on UC Berkeley’s stages for the first time, representing a wide range of disciplines and genres, as well as the return of longtime Cal Performances collaborators and audience favorites with beloved and rarely performed repertoire.
Cal Performances also announced a new programming initiative, Illuminations, which invites audiences to explore the connections between UC Berkeley’s groundbreaking scholarship and the performing arts, through the themes of Music and the Mind and Fact or Fiction.
As a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic and guidelines and ongoing direction from public health officials regarding large public gatherings, Cal Performances will be unable to present our fall 2020 performances as originally scheduled. On August 25, 2020 Cal Performances launched Cal Performances at Home, an ambitious performing arts streaming series that features 15 newly produced, full-length Main Stage performance video streams available beginning October 1, 2020 through January 14, 2021.
