Alhassane Camara

West African Dance

Alhassane Camara (Conakry, Guinea, West Africa) followed his mother’s calling as a dancer and by age 11 was fully immersed in Guinea’s Ballet Tayely, studying and performing traditional Guinea dances. He continued to excel, not only as a dancer but also as a fully trained musician, performing the musical rhythms of the drums and accompanying instruments for traditional Guinea dances. Camara went on to become the company’s lead dancer and choreographer. He is forever grateful to his mentor, the world-renowned Youssouf Koumbassa, who took Camara on as a protégé, embraced his talent, and encouraged his dedication and determination. This is Camara’s first year working with Berkeley/Oakland AileyCamp.
