Modern Dance

Masataka Aita (Tokyo, Japan) officially began training with Cecilia Marta at the San Francisco Dance Center. After attending secondary school, he trained at the Shawl-Anderson Dance Center, The Ailey School, and the Graham School in New York. While attending City College of San Francisco and UC Berkeley, Aita performed works by the Dallas Black Dance Theater, Merce Cunningham, Doris Humphrey, Martha Graham, and faculty members of UC Berkeley’s Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies.

Aita has worked in Hong Kong for a nonprofit group focusing on literacy, and as a manager for the United Nations’ Ambassador for Japan in New York. In 2023, he received his master’s degree in international peace studies on a full scholarship at Soka University, Tokyo. Currently, Aita serves as an assistant manager for Tokyo Buza, a premier contemporary dance company in Japan, and as an oral literacy instructor for the Tokyo Metropolitan School District. This is his 13th year working with Berkeley/Oakland AileyCamp.
