
Neema Bickersteth
Neema Bickersteth was born and raised in Canada to parents from Sierra Leone. She is known for her skills as a singer, an actor, and a maker of cross-disciplinary performance. In recent years, she has specialized in contemporary projects in opera, theater, and music. These include the title role in Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha—A Musical Reimagining at the Luminato Festival; the lead role in The Ritual of Breath is the Rite to Resist (Hopkins Center/Stanford Live), an opera by poet Vievee Francis and composer Jonathan Berger responding to the murder of Eric Garner; and Century Song, a virtuosic work she co-created with Volcano Theatre, which has had multiple successful international tours. Upcoming this season for Bickersteth, with the Canadian Opera Company: Aportia Chryptych, A Black opera for Portia White, created by mixed-media artist, Haui.
