Yo-Yo Ma & Kathryn Stott
Songs of Comfort and Hope
Peerless cellist and internationally beloved music ambassador Yo-Yo Ma has devoted his career to projects that connect people across geographic and cultural divides. In a recital perfect for holiday viewing by the whole family, Ma and fellow musical explorer, the acclaimed pianist Kathryn Stott join forces for a diverse concert recorded in mid-November at Taiwan’s National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) Concert Hall.
Their Songs of Comfort and Hope program—inspired by the phenomenally popular series of recorded-at-home musical offerings that Ma began sharing in the first days of the COVID-19 lockdown—combines a wide range of selections from the piano/cello repertoire with traditional and fresh new takes on favorites like “Shenandoah,” “Londonderry Air,” and the “Last Rose of Summer,” arranged by A-list composers including Benjamin Britten and Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw. Ma and Stott also lend the profound connection of their 35-year musical relationship to Robert Schumann’s vibrant Five Pieces in Folk Style (Op. 102) and an arrangement of Manuel de Falla’s winning Seven Spanish Songs.
“Over… many years, they’ve developed a wonderfully warm and mutually responsive musical partnership that has blossomed in performances that are both generous and incisive” (NPR).
