Cal Performances at Home 2021-22 Season
Cal Performances at Home is the name of a series of streamed performances released during the pandemic to keep the joy of performance alive at a time when the pandemic made it impossible for us to be in the same performance space together. While Cal Performances has fully returned to in-person performances this year, we recently received funding to produce and publish recordings of multiple performances from the 2021–22 season.
It is our hope that these recordings help even more people experience the joys of music, dance, and theater and provide a better way to connect with those community members who are not yet ready to return to in-person performances.
To help keep our patrons entertained during January (a period when we have fewer live performances than usual), we plan to release our first three videos weekly during the month. The first three performances will be:
- The Danish String Quartet’s performance of Schubert’s String Quartet in G major, available 1/13–1/19;
- The Bay Area premiere of More Forever, a collaboration between Caleb Teicher & Company (dance) and Conrad Tao (piano), available 1/20–1/26;
- Kronos Quartet performing with special guest vocalist Mahsa Vahdat, available 1/27–2/2.
Additional streaming performances will be announced throughout the season via email, on social media, and on our Cal Performances at Home web page. While the performances will not be announced all at once, it is our goal to select performances for recording that, when taken collectively, create a well-rounded offering to reflect the wide variety of programming that Cal Performances patrons have come to appreciate.
While these recordings are being offered free to the public, they do still require significant time to produce and represent a tremendous amount of work on the part of the artists who put on the live performances. For this reason, we are encouraging anyone who is able and feels moved to do so to consider making a donation to Cal Performances. We greatly appreciate your support, which allows us to share the joy of music, dance, and theater with even more individuals in our community at a time when we most need it!

To watch on your TV, you must be able to stream, cast, or mirror from your computer or mobile device by running your browser to your television set. There are a variety of ways to do that.
Many newer desktop and laptop MACs and PCs have an HDMI port that you can connect to your TV directly for audio and video. If your device doesn’t have an HDMI port, you can buy the appropriate adaptor- one end of the adaptor plugs into your device and an HDMI cable to the TV plugs into the other end.

If your device doesn’t have an HDMI port, you can buy the appropriate adaptor that connects an HDMI cable to the TV. We require minimum stable download speeds of 500 kbps or faster in order to view our lowest quality, SD 240p. Since bandwidth tends to fluctuate for a number of unforeseen variables, we always recommend you use a dedicated Internet line of 5 Mbps or faster to stream and download high quality videos on the Internet. For optimal performance, a hardwired connection via Ethernet is best, but if you prefer to use WiFi, be sure that your router is configured correctly and that your network is not being shared with other devices (this can limit the starting speeds you pay your ISP for).
Not sure what speeds your device is receiving? Visit https://testmy.net/download (on mobile or desktop) for an estimate. We recommend performing this test a few times since bandwidth can change.
We support playback in browsers that can decode H.264 videos in an HTML5 player. If you’re using an older browser, system, or website, we ask that you upgrade to be able to watch the performances.
Supported browsers/versions:
- Chrome 30+ (has automatic updates)
- Firefox 27+ (has automatic updates)*
- Internet Explorer 11*
- Microsoft Edge
- Safari 9+
*H.264 video is only supported in Firefox for Windows 7 and later. Firefox versions on Windows XP are not supported.
*Older versions of Internet Explorer (IE 10, 9, 8, etc) that lack support for the TLS 1.2 protocol and HTML5 cannot be used to watch the performances . As of January 12, 2016, Microsoft has stopped releasing updates to older versions of IE.
In addition to the audio controls of your chosen viewing device, there is a volume control button inside the video stream of the concert and is located in the lower right corner of the video frame.
Yes, there is an option to view the video in full screen mode. That option is located in the lower right corner of the video frame. To exit full screen mode at any time, you can press the “Esc” button to return to the main viewing page. We recommend viewing in full screen mode for the best experience. Please note that chat is not available when you are viewing in full screen mode.
Most freezing and buffering issues are caused by the strength, stability, and speed of your internet connection.
First, we suggest that you refresh the page. You may be asked to login to your account again after refreshing. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, check your internet to make sure you’re still connected.
