Superstars of the chamber music world, the husband and wife duo of cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han has had a singular impact on American concert music for more than a quarter century, with the artists recognized as elite performers, committed educators, and respected impresarios. This all-Russian program features Rachmaninoff’s rhapsodic Cello Sonata along with Prokofiev’s mercurial Cello Sonata and Myaskovsky’s Second Cello Sonata, which was inspired by a particularly memorable performance of the Prokofiev work by Finckel’s one-time teacher, the great Mstislav Rostropovich.
“A performance in which lyricism and virtuosity shared equal roles, but what made it particularly memorable was the degree of exquisitely intimate ensemble achieved by Finckel and pianist Han, with spontaneity, vigor and seamless melody”—The Washington Post
