Peter Phillips, director
The Tallis Scholars have come a long way since founder Peter Phillips first gathered a group of fellow undergraduates to sing Renaissance songs at Oxford University more than 50 years ago. The peerless ensemble, a pioneer of this century’s early-music revival, is celebrated far and wide for its uncanny vocal blend, pristine clarity, and purity of tone in a range of Renaissance polyphony. The Tallis singers return to Berkeley with a program centered on one of Josquin des Prez’s true masterpieces, his Missa Fortuna desperata, as well as works by Jean Mouton, Walter Lambe, and Nicolas Gombert.
“Hearing The Tallis Scholars live is a trip. When the 10 singers open up in two and a half or three octaves of spacious polyphony, you have the aural sense of a cathedral in sound”—San Francisco Classical Voice
